Venice Biennale 2011

Just back from Venice - incredible trip since I love slogging thru the puddles of Venice. The art was not as earth shattering as recent years; however, in my opinion. The absolute best thing was the Glasstres exhibit and the Fortuny Museum. The Glass works by current glass artists in an old, crumbling, historic glass factory were so fabulous. I love how the pieces were hung and displayed in the factory...so lovely.
Here are some fav pix: check out the incredible piece hanging. Beeswax covered the lower half of the piece. Beautiful.

Spent the weekend in Boston on the waterfront with my bike - fabulous art/outdoor time. ICA's show, DANCE DRAW, was fabulous. Honestly, it's the first time I left the ICA satisfied! They really stepped it up. Biking in and out of the city, along the waterfront was incredible - I had a completely different experience than when I just drive in.

...working to set up studio for fall painting WOO HOO! Summer, as most artist moms I know can attest to, is a flap-about with kids and the creative juices are often left cold, not even simmering...I learned long ago not to fight it, go with the flow.

In my experience, summer's adventures, heat, breezy boredom, fresh food, poison ivy, buggy bike rides, books, sea and mountain air, stubbed toes, muddy dogs, playing in the grass, routines and unstructured rigamarole somehow influence the art I produce in the fall...it all comes out in the end!

So, with the last shreds of summer, and especially after divorce, the material I've compiled is beginning to simmer...Can't wait.

winding down with the paintings for the show coming up...am happy with the new stuff..always a bit like giving birth to some of them - they are what they are at this point. Luckily I like mostly what I see!

Spending much time chasing after my bad dogs who enjoy bolting into the woods after chipmunks...what's up with this year? My jack russell and corgi basically LEAVE for sometimes over an hour then come back with dirt in their eyeballs and smeared who-knows-what all over...Calvin showed up bedraggled the other day with sprays of blood all over himself. I only hope he's not getting into baby.....well, he probably is. ugh. Here he is with the "good" dog who does NOTHING wrong except maybe love too much. Must clean studio - it's disaster central.

RECEPTION for my NEW SHOW at MERCURY GALLERY IS SUNDAY, June 19 - in the afternoon - details to follow! At least 15 new paintings....Rockport is a fabulous destination spot - so beautiful and Mercury Gallery is directly across the street from the new and fabulous Shalin Liu Performance Center. Sounds like a perfect weekend get-away...I hear seagulls already.

Went to the ICA in Boston yesterday and enjoyed seeing Mark Bradford's work...layers of papers adhered together in a painterly way - beautiful. I especially liked his minimalist pieces that consisted mainly of salon permanent wave papers...they were translucent and rich. I loved how he rubbed and sanded and manipulated his paintings - you could see his hand in everything - it was wonderful.

some new paintings coming along...lots of blues, greens, greys and yellows for some reason; imagery from my kayak trip; more natural-looking forms (boulders, leaves, growing things);

taking another printmaking class at DeCordova again; can't wait to get on etching.

still trying to incorporate some prints with my paintings...it's unnerving to fuss with them, knowing I could completely muck them up. A favorite art teacher from way back told me, if you are protecting a pretty mark or are protecting a part of a painting you are intrigued with, get rid of it - it's never good to keep part of a painting precious...you have to work on the painting as a unit. I always think of that if I'm protecting a nice-looking drip or something!

Guanacaste, Costa Rica...I know I'm a die-hard New Englander but wow, it's hard to come back from paradise to ice and Yaktrax and blistering winds and dry skin...hmmmm. I guess it's all about looking forward to the next season.

As my mom would say, "buck up!" So, I'll bring on the humidifier, neutrogena extra emollient lotion, drink a hot toddy and throw on the biggest wool sweater I've got...back to work!

...am posting random pix: beautiful dead bird I found outside my studio (awww), new paintings in the works, last day of my printmaking class with Shoshana, my latest prints (I'm new at this whole thing, so they're very basic).

I'm enjoying the challenge of incorporating my little prints with the paintings...love the juxtaposition but don't want to compromise the simplicity of the prints. Stay tuned.

...all the while still playing the piano and futzing around with the uke, managing the family, flapping around with Christmas stuff, contemplating life...art would not be as rich without all the muck and marvels of every day life.

just returned from a trip to El Salvador. My girls, Julia and Amelia started a charity, Kids to Kids, a few years ago which supports several programs in the region (among others) so we took a trip to visit. It was a beautiful country; wonderful people, but lots of poverty and violence. Please CHECK OUT the LATEST VIDEO - lots of footage of the trips they've been on/our trip to El Salvador - and my daughter, Julia.

My friend, Sarah Henry (San Juan Islands local-ahhhh, someday I'll get there), who is Director of

World Connect organized the trip.

UGH - very difficult to view myself on the video since I wasn't my effervescent best that morning but, despite my vanity, it's a GREAT video since it really gives you a glimpse into my world; also, the collectors'/gallery director's comments are right on the mark - only in that their observations are so how I'm hoping the art is perceived...it's all good stuff. I'm no longer at the lovely and inspiring Saxonville Studios! This was a bittersweet decision for me but I'm hopeful it'll be the right move.

q: How crazy am I for moving out of such an amazing space?

a: Well, I'll be "placing" a BluHome in my yard so I can keep tabs on my kids and have all my junk in one location. This will undoubtedly create more of a challenge around open studios time.

Venice Biennale

ok, I never really understood the gig about video art all that much. It all seems pretentious and flappy fruitcake. I've read some negative comments about the 2009 "Making Worlds" Biennale in Venice but MAN, I was video-swayed in a huge way. My fav's off the top of my head (and I know I'm forgetting some other artists...my notes became more and more unreadable during the course of my visit!) are:

Ragnar Kjartansson's, "The End." This video killed me. I'm a music nutball, so the video had me from the moment it said hello: small room, 4 screens/one on each wall, compelling music: 2 dudes (Ragnar is apparently a complete rock-star in Iceland) playing one or two instruments (banjo, piano,electric/acoustic guitar) and/or singing a terribly simple but fabulous tune, all together despite their completely varied wintery and remote locations.I don't know how they did this but it was crazy good.

Fiona Tan's gorgeous "living paintings." Strikingly well put together, emotional, and beautifully lit black and white "paintings" that absolutely glow. For example, you'd be looking at a profile of a kid or older woman - positioned like a renaissance painting - and slowly they'd twitch or turn and face you. They were probably only 16x10 inches or so, so you felt like you were looking thru a window at an incredibly, personal moment.

Paul Chan, "Sade for Sade's Sake." Wow, at first I was feeling a little too Yankee to gawk at his pulsating, vibrating, black and white shadow figures in various sexual positions, moving across the wall..figures slowly coming in and out of the picture, fantastically vibrating together. But gradually I loosened up and began to feel sad and tense seeing the almost desperate vibrations of these figures mingled with vibrating aging figures crawling across the ground...wild stuff.

Britain's Susan MacWilliam. A mash-up extraordinaire: stories told from an elderly lady describing her relationship with a psychic to her daughter. One screen, divided into thirds - often times the outer screens repeating a motion or a phrase over and over while the middle screen continues with something else. There was a lot of verbatim here about psychics and repetitive old lady storytelling but I LOVED this video. I felt like I was listening to Escape Mechanism's "Most Wonderful" in visual form. The movements and musical empty spaces the artist designed were amazing. I was less focused on the subject matter and went nuts over the composition.

I'm a "Pearl of Cotuit..." Several of my paintings will be on display among other Cotuit

(Cape Cod) regulars March 10 - April 26 at the CAHOON MUSEUM in Cotuit, MA.

This is an exciting show, as it marks the 25th anniversary of this great, local museum. The reception for the show is March 13, 5 - 7. Tell all your friends and relations! All art will be on sale. Pick up a lobster on the way home or have a drink with me afterwards at our favorite bar, the Regatta, 2 minutes away. It's less than an hour and half TOPS from Boston. Be bold! Be adventuresome!

here is a painting I did on plaster that featured a transferred image from my son's homework. (click on to see detail) I loved the simplicity and subtle beauty of his drawings - he was depicting bits from a story he read and I was especially interested in the little boxes in the corners: either had an "check" or did not...hmmmmm. I told him he'd get 25% if the painting sold. His nerf gun is still waiting at Target, need I say more. (FYI, your computer is fine, it appears blurry because of the beeswax.)
